On September 14th, 2024 Chicago was the proud host of an extraordinary celebration of Slovak culture, organized by Veselica Slovak Cultural Organization in collaboration with the Slovak Mission. The main event took place at the Performing Arts Center in Lemont, IL, where Folk Ensemble Vagonár from Poprad, Slovakia, presented their stunning Gala Program, “TA LEN Tak”. This remarkable showcase captivated the audience with the beauty and diversity of Slovakia’s rich cultural heritage.
During the Gala Program, Vagonár highlighted the unique traditions of various Slovak regions, presenting a mesmerizing array of traditional costumes with each performance. Their artistry in authentic Slovak folk dancing, singing, and playing traditional musical instruments brought the audience on a vibrant cultural journey through Slovakia. From the soulful sounds of the fujara to the dynamic melodies of the cimbalom orchestra, each element demonstrated the deep connection between Slovak traditional music and dance. The ensemble’s talent, energy, and passion shone through in every number, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
Following the Gala Program, celebrations continued at the Slovak Mission with the ‘Ludová Veselica’, a traditional Slovak folk dance celebration, where attendees could meet all Vagonar performers in person. Vagonár also led a Slovak folk dance lesson, inviting attendees to join in and experience the joy of Slovak folk dance firsthand.
During their stay in Chicago, Vagonár took part in several key performances. One of the event highlights was their performance at the Slovak Mission Feast Days and Picnic, “Odpustová Slávnosť pri Príležitosti Sedembolestnej Panny Márie, Patronky Slovenskej Misie” in Palos Hills, IL. Here, attendees had the special opportunity to witness Vagonár perform alongside the young talents of our Children’s Ensemble Veselicka, a true celebration of Slovak traditions being passed down to the next generation.
Vagonár showcased their talents also at one of Chicago’s most iconic landmarks, Willis Tower. Against the backdrop of Chicago’s skyline, they presented a dynamic variety of Slovak dances and songs from different regions, captivating the audience with their authenticity and energy. After their performance, the ensemble visited Skydeck, where they enjoyed beautiful city views. During their time in Chicago, Vagonár also had the chance to explore some of the city’s famous sites, including Navy Pier, Riverwalk, Millennium Park, Oak Beach, and more, making the visit both culturally enriching and memorable.
