About Veselica

Rozveseliť i potešiť chceme.
Našu krásnu slovenskú kultúru tancom i spevom vám predvedieme.
Kúsok domoviny do vaších sŕdc vniesť chceme, aby ste nezabudli, že Slovákmi sme navždy nimi budeme.”

Veselica

Welcome to Veselica Slovak Cultural Organization!

Chicago, known for its diverse cultural landscape, is home to various ethnic communities that contribute to the city’s vibrant tapestry. Among these communities is Veselica, a Slovak cultural organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Slovak heritage in the heart of Chicago.

Our Story

Established in 1999 by a group of young Slovak immigrants who shared a dream and passion for preserving Slovak folklore, customs, and traditions, Veselica has become a cornerstone for the Slovak community in Chicago. Thousands of miles away from their homeland, these founders laid the groundwork for an organization that has grown into a dynamic cultural hub. Today, Veselica is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Our Slovak Folk Dance Ensemble

Veselica has more than 30 members from 13 to 99 years of age, including dancers, singers, its own cimbalom orchestra, and the children’s ensemble Veselička, which includes about 30 children from Kindergarten to 8th grade. Our repertoire contains performances from various regions of Slovakia, such as Liptov, Horehron, Spiš, Šariš, Zemplin, and Goral. The Slovenský Folklórny súbor Veselica is a prominent component of the organization, actively engaging in traditional dance performances that preserve the rich folkloric heritage of Slovakia.

Our Activities

Throughout the year, Veselica organizes and participates in various community events, festivals, and celebrations. Our notable Annual Veselica Gala, held at the beginning of February, hosts more than 650 guests from across the Chicago Metropolitan area and other states. We also participate in local and regional events and festivals, such as Pierogi Fest in Whiting, Indiana, the Skokie Festival of Cultures, Na Goralska Nute in Lemont, IL, and the Slovak Tri-concert in Cleveland, OH.

Cultural & Educational Initiatives

Veselica takes pride in its educational initiatives aimed at passing down the Slovak language, traditions, and customs to future generations. We offer folklore classes for children in cooperation with the Slovak Academy of Chicago for the Children’s Ensemble Veselička. We also conduct dance and singing workshops for teens and adults, with regular practices at the Slovak Mission in Palos Hills, IL. These activities, in collaboration with other organizations, ensure the continuity of Slovak heritage among both young and old community members.

Slovak Folk Dance and Music Practices

Our practices are held every Monday at Slovak Mission, 9855 South Kean Avenue, Palos Hills, IL 60465 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The Children’s Ensemble Veselička practices at the Slovak Academy of Chicago, following the school’s schedule and summer holidays.

Community Engagement

Our organization actively collaborates with other cultural groups, institutions, and local authorities to enhance the visibility and understanding of Slovak culture in the Chicago area. These partnerships contribute to a broader cultural exchange and appreciation, enriching the cultural landscape of our city.

Get Involved

Veselica welcomes individuals who are passionate about Slovak culture, dance and music to join our ensembles or get involved. Whether through volunteering, participating in events, or supporting our initiatives, there are various ways for community members to actively contribute to the preservation of Slovak heritage.

Through cultural performances, educational efforts, and community engagement, Veselica continues to play a vital role in fostering a strong sense of identity and belonging among the Slovak diaspora in Chicago. Join us in celebrating and preserving the rich heritage of Slovakia
