In Chicago, February 10th, 2024 – Ambassador Radovan Javorčík Extends Heartfelt Greetings to the Guests of the Gala. The letter was presented at the Veselica Gala event to more than 650 guests from the Chicago Metropolitan area and other States of the USA and guests from Canada. Below, you can read the letter in Slovak and English language.
Milí priatelia Slovenska, krajania,
Veľmi som sa tešil na stretnutia s Vami. Bohužiaľ, moja diplomatická imunita nestačila na COVID. Preto s manželkou budeme dnes tancovať doma sami, ale na hudbu z Veselice.
Fotografie z prijatí prezidenta Kisku v 2018 alebo mojich predchodcov, slovenských veľvyslancov, v Chicagu mi ukázali dve dôležité veci.
Prvá – Chicago bolo a je magnetom pre migrantov z celého sveta. Vietor zavial do Mesta vetrov mnoho generácií Slovákov. Stan Mikita, Peter Bondra, Marian Hossa, sú ikonami Chicaga aj Slovenska. Anektoda hovorí, že Stan Mikita sa na pokrik “Check the Czech!” vždy opýtal s úsmevom ale jasne, „o kom to hovoria?“.
John Daniel Hertz, pôvodným menom Schandor Herz zo Sklabine prišiel v 1879 do Chicaga aby o 20 rokov založil Yellow Cab Company a neskôr Hertz Car Rental. Na farbu pre autá sa spýtal univerzity, ktorí je najviditeľnejšia. Na cenu jazdy sa spýtal svojho svedomia, či si to môže dovoliť aj imigrant a znížil taxu zo 70 na 20 centov za míľu.
Druhá – generácie prichádzajú a odchádzajú. Slováci sa vždy vrátia. Chicagske Slovenské národné slávnosti oslovujú 250-tisíc krajanov. Slovak Academy of Chicago učila ešte starých rodičov mnohých na dnešnej veselici po slovensky. Ďakujem všetkým, čo akadémiu v roku 2015 obnovili. Riaditeľka Zuzana Fidriková odvádza skvelú prácu. Súbor Veselica je unikát. A to som videl mnoho súborov. Slovenská katolícka misia založená v r. 2019 a je veľmi mladá. Pod vedením Stanislava Bindasa sa za 4 roky stala skvelou inštitúciou. Teším sa na návštevu misijného centra.
Čo tieto dve veci spája? Odvaha a pamäť – odvaha odísť, odvaha vyskúšať nové veci a pamäť odkiaľ sme prišli a čo nás spája. Veselica gala je oslava odvahy a pamäť vás prítomných
Chcel by som poďakovať všetkým, čo sa podieľali na príprave na Veselica Gala. Zvlášť honorárnej konzulke Rosemary Macko Wysnosky a jej manželovi Dennisovi, ktorí 12 rokov slúžia komunite a Slovensku. Teší ma, že práca Rosemary inšpirovala nie jednu osobu, aby v budúcnosti prebrala konzulskú štafetu.

Dear friends of Slovakia, compatriots,
I was very much looking forward to meeting you. Unfortunately, my diplomatic immunity wasn’t enough for COVID. Sadly, my wife and I will dance tonight at home alone, but to music from Veselica.
Photos from visit of President Kiska in 2018 or my predecessors, Slovak ambassadors, in Chicago showed me two important things.
First – Chicago was and is a magnet for migrants from around the world. The wind sailed many generations of Slovaks into the Windy City. Stan Mikita, Peter Bondra, Marián Hossa, are icons of Chicago and Slovakia. An anecdote has it, that Stan Mikita always replied to a shout on the ice “Check the Czech!” with simple, “what is Czech?” John Daniel Hertz, originally named Schandor Herz from Sklabina, came to Chicago in 1879 to found the Yellow Cab Company and later Hertz Car Rental 20 years later. About the color for his cabs he asked the university which is the most visible. He asked his conscience if an immigrant could afford a ride and reduced the charge from 70 to 20 cents per mile.
The second – generations come and go. Slovaks always come back. The Chicago Slovak National Festival targets 250,000 compatriots. The Slovak Academy of Chicago taught many grandparents Slovak at today’s ceremony. Thanks goes to everyone who renewed the Academy in 2015. Director Zuzana Fidriková is doing a great job. The Veselica ensemble is unique. And I’ve seen a lot of dance groups. The Slovak Catholic Mission was founded in 2019 and is very young. Under the leadership of Stanislav Bindas, it became a great institution in 4 years. I look forward to visiting the mission center later this year.
What unites these two things? Courage and memory – the courage to leave, the courage to try new things, and the memory of where we came from and what unites us. Veselica gala is a celebration of your courage and memory.
I would like to thank everyone who participated in the preparation for the Veselica Gala. Especially to Honorary Consul Rosemary Macko Wysnosky and her husband Dennis, who have served the community and Slovakia for 12 years. I am pleased that Rosemary’s work has inspired not one person to take over the consular baton in the future.
